Karihwanoron Kanienkeha Owenna Tsi ionterihwaientahkwa
Karihwanoron Kanienkeha Owenna Tsi ionterihwaientahkwa, a home-like environment Language and Cultural program which also includes teaching the necessary academics in the language in order to allow our children to move on to higher education. Karihwanoron is in its 30th year of operation and we have seen our graduates move on to high school, cegep and University. Today, we have 5 graduates come back to Karihwanoron and now teach the current students in our program.
Its been a long, hard struggle to keep our unique Language and Cultural program alive without core funding. The federal government provided a small amount of funds which was funneled through another local school. These funds barely covered 12 weeks of our 42 week year. Plenty of fundraisers were organized over 30 years, a guestimate of 250 fundraisers plus numerous donations within our community and outside.
In February 2019 it was announced that after a long hard struggle to convince the government that our program was worthy, Karihwanoron would receive core funding as of April 2019 in an amount of 1.5 million over the next three years. Our program is not out of the woods yet, we must now acquire land and build ourselves a new building in order to keep our core funding. We currently run out of two buildings which both do not belong to us, we also rent the gym at our local youth center once per week in order to teach phys ed. We are in need to move as soon as we raise enough funds to match the governments contribution.
As of April 2019, we have limited our fundraising events to 3 appose to 10 per year in order to allow our parents to be less stressed.
The following are pages are random pictures of our program. We teach life skills, our ceremonies, our songs and dance, we teach the children how to cook, clean and take care of each other. We teach them how to garden, pick medicines and how to harvest. We also teach math, science, reading, writing, physical education, history and much more… all in the Language. Most of our families come from English speaking homes and bring in plenty of English, however they leave Karihwanoron with great understanding and with knowledge of carrying on conversations in our language. Our students have other opportunities to keep on learning once they leave Karihwanoron and we wish them well and always encourage them to keep learning… our future depends on it.
